The power unit is similar to a flashlight, simply a barrel with batteries and a flashlight bulb. At the lighted end, the acrylic shaft screws onto the barrel. The acrylic shaft is simple fiber optics. No light can be seen from the side of the shaft, only from the tip. By "roughing up" the side of the tip with sand paper, you can see the light from the "roughed up" side at the tip.
